WHAT TO PREPARE FOR WITH THE UKA SALSA EXAMINATIONS
The course will run over 3 days - Friday, Saturday, Sunday for 5 hours each day. A maximum of 12 participants will be allowed.
For those that are already teaching, this gives more of an insight to teaching, prior to taking a Professional Assessment. For those that are interested in teaching, this gives them an insight to what teaching is all about - before they start training as Teachers.
The syllabus is designed to prepare you towards a professional examination.
A representative from the UKA will be present, to answer questions about the UKA's Professional Assessments, as well as informing you of the benefits of joining the UKA.
There is a Theory and Practical part to this course

The topics covered in the Theory part of the course include:
  • Qualities of a good teacher
  • Preparation for a class
  • Psychology
  • How to criticise
  • Class management
  • Teaching as your business
  • History of Salsa music and Dance
  • Music Analysis and rhythm knowledge
  • The differences between the Salsa Styles
  • Comparison of the different Latin Rhythms
  • Child Protection
  • Professional Code of Practice
  • Risk Assessment
  • and more...
The topics covered in the Practical part of the course include:
  • Introduction to a class
  • How to break down the basic steps
  • How to explain the Salsa rhythm to complete beginners
  • How to construct a basic Salsa dance in both Cuban and Cross-body Style
All the participants will be asked to teach a routine in front of the whole group. This course will prepare you toward a professional exam.

We will not recommend that you go for an exam straight after the course is finished as you will have a lot of reading material and practical assignments to complete. Practicing what you have learned in the course will ensure that you are well prepared for the exams.

We will conduct an assessment as part of the course to give you a benchmark of your progress. Then we can arrange for an examiner from the UKA to come and assess your knowledge. The exam costs £210 which includes a year's membership and public liability insurance.

The UKA exam consists of 4 Parts:
  1. DEMONSTRATION

The candidate will be required to show at least 4 different rhythms/dances appropriate to the style. These should be danced as both lead and follow. The candidate may be required to dance solo.
  2. THEORY

During an assessment interview the candidate will be required to outline their experience and expectations in their dance career. A knowledge of the history and derivation of each dance. Cuban Motion & Isolation should be described and shown. Mambo, Merengue, Cha Cha, Salsa counted in beats & bars. Holds and leads should be described.
An outline knowledge of The Body in relation to Dance.
  3. TEACHING ABILITY

To gain Associate and Licentiate status the Candidate is required to be observed and assessed conducting a teaching session on the site of their activities.

They will be expected to answer questions about the session. Identify common faults and their remedy.
  4. LEGISLATION

An up-to-date knowledge on The Child Protection Act, Fire Regulations, Risk assessment, PPL & PRS is required.
