Kumina is a Kongo-based ancestral African religion that continues to
be practiced by the Maroons of Jamaica in the easternmost parishes of Jamaica .
The purpose of the dance is to ensure the passage of the soul to heaven. There
are two sections to the dance: the first portion alludes to a spiritual
gathering where praise is given to a person’s soul before it moves on to
heaven. The performance then moves into a rejoicing of extracting the spirit
from the physical world and into heaven.
BONGO MAN
A dance of celebration that is still part of the folk tradition in many parts of Jamaica today when the head family of the village gives birth to a son. The village people bring gifts to the family to show their approval of the new king to be.
